  1. Gene Scott

Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite

The Testers: The Poison Remembers by Gene Scott is a riveting dual-timeline thriller that spans centuries and continents, stitching together Tudor intrigue and modern-day pharmaceutical corruption.

We first find ourselves in 1521, where Thomas Tester, a royal wine taster at Hampton Court, uses his family’s herbalist lineage to detect poisons meant for the crown. As secrets and betrayal swirl around him, Thomas risks everything to protect his loved ones.

Then, we’re in 2025 in Appalachia, where Dr. Grace Blackwood uncovers a conspiracy of falsified drug trials and mysterious deaths that echo the secrets of her ancestry. When her life is threatened, she must tap into the Testers’ forgotten legacy and Appalachian resistance to survive. The narrative toggles seamlessly between the past and present, creating a suspenseful tale about inherited knowledge, systemic danger, and the tenacity of truth-seekers. With its deft blend of history, mystery, and social commentary, this thriller digs deep into the poisons that endure and the courage required to expose them.

Author Gene Scott offers readers a brilliant fusion of historical suspense and modern thriller that’s rich with atmosphere and razor-sharp tension. The threads of the story come together with great attention to detail in an intricately layered narrative that keeps readers guessing, while the naturalistic dialogue and buildup of the characters’ individual stories bring the ideas of generational truth and resistance forward effortlessly. This makes the work an ideal read for fans of genre-bending fiction that delivers both intellectual depth and nail-biting suspense.

I especially enjoyed the medical thriller and historical combination, which was original, and taught me a lot about where our attitudes to modern medicine come from.

A compelling, intelligent thriller that honors ancestral legacy while confronting present-day corruption with grit and urgency. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend The Testers: The Poison Remembers, and I cannot wait to read more from this talented storyteller in the future.
