Trump to Base: “I Don’t Want Your Support”

—MAGA Civil War Erupts Over Epstein Files

July 16, 2025

In an extraordinary rebuke of his own base, President Donald Trump lashed out at supporters demanding transparency about the Jeffrey Epstein investigation files, calling them “weaklings” and declaring he no longer wants their support.

The Breaking Point

The controversy erupted this morning when Trump posted on Truth Social: “I don’t want their support anymore!”

The president labeled those questioning his administration’s handling of the Epstein files as “my PAST supporters” who have “bought into this ‘bullsh*t,’ hook, line, and sinker.”

The Epstein Files Controversy

The conflict stems from mounting pressure within Trump’s own party for the Justice Department to release all documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died by suicide in 2019. For years, conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein have been a cornerstone of certain right-wing narratives, with many Trump supporters believing the files would expose corruption among political elites.

Trump’s administration has declined to release the files in their entirety, sparking unprecedented resistance from his base. Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel—both former proponents of Epstein-related conspiracy theories—have quietly distanced themselves from promises of full disclosure by declining further comment on the release process.

Republicans in Open Defiance

The president’s rejection comes as his supporters were already breaking ranks:

  • House Speaker Mike Johnson publicly called for “complete transparency” on the Epstein matter

  • Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is gathering signatures to force a vote requiring the DOJ to release all documents

  • Rep. Thomas Massie partnered with Greene on a discharge petition to bypass Trump-aligned leadership

When pressed by ABC News at the White House, Trump doubled down: “They’re stupid and foolish Republicans falling into the Democrats’ net.”

An Unprecedented Rupture

This represents something new in American politics: a leader explicitly rejecting his most devoted followers while they’re actively supporting a cause he once championed. The Epstein files were a rallying cry for Trump’s base throughout his campaigns, with promises of transparency helping fuel his movement.

“Instead of talking about our incredible successes,” Trump told reporters, “they’re obsessed with a dead man from four years ago.”

The president insisted, without evidence, that the entire Epstein controversy is a Democratic ploy, declaring it the “Jeffrey Epstein hoax.”

A Movement Dividing in Real Time

What makes this moment unique is watching the MAGA coalition fracture while both sides dig in. Unlike past controversies where Trump’s base ultimately rallied behind him, this split is playing out publicly with high-profile defections.

The base appears to be splitting into three camps:

  • The Loyalists: Already crafting explanations for why Trump’s rejection is strategic genius

  • The Betrayed: Expressing genuine hurt and confusion on Truth Social and X

  • The Defiant: Joining GOP lawmakers in demanding transparency regardless of Trump’s wishes

Mike Rothschild, who studies conspiracy movements, told NPR: “They’re trying to reconcile two things that both cannot be true at the same time—and finding a way to make both of them true.”

Several pro-Trump influencers have lost thousands of followers since voicing support for the document release, while others have begun calling for “MAGA without Trump.”

What Happens Now?

As congressional Republicans prepare to force the document release through procedural maneuvers, we’re witnessing uncharted territory: What happens when an authoritarian-style leader tells his followers to stop believing in the conspiracies he promoted?

Political scientists note that while authoritarian movements typically demand absolute loyalty, they rarely see leaders openly reject their own supporters. This creates a situation where traditional models of political behavior may not apply.

The question isn’t just whether Trump supporters will accept being called “weaklings” and told their concerns are a “hoax.” It’s whether a movement built on unwavering loyalty can survive when the leader himself breaks the bond.

If being publicly disowned isn’t the breaking point, maybe there isn’t one. The question now isn’t how far Trump will go—it’s how far his followers are willing to crawl after him.

Update: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s discharge petition continues gathering signatures—reportedly at 147 as of Tuesday afternoon—with both Republicans and Democrats expressing support for forcing a vote on the Epstein document release. With the 2026 midterms looming, this fracture may prove to be not just a momentary glitch—but a permanent scar.
